5 Card Stud rules for play

5 card stud is very similar to 7 card stud, so for the purposes of this lesson, I am going to assume that you have learned to play 7 card stud poker.

The betting limits, buy-in, bankroll, ante and the deal are all virtually identicle to seven card stud. Howver, whilst seven card stud can be found in casinos across the world, five card stud is a much more socila game, ands is usually limited to card games. However, it can be found on-line on Bodog, Ultimate bet and Poker Stars.

Betting

The hand starts off with the players all contributing the Ante to the pot. After that, the betting is dictaded by the stakes. There are four betting rounds, and the stakes increase in the second 2 rounds. For example, if the stakes are $10/$20, then in the first two rounds the bet/raise must be $10 exactly. In the last two, it must be $20. There is a cap of three allowable raises in 5 card stud, so if a bet is made, it can only be raised 3 times. After this, all players must have called or folded. If there are only 2 players, then the cap is incresed to 5 raises.

Playing a hand

Once the Antes are placed, players are dealt one card face down and one card face up (door card). The first round of betting then takes place, usually with the lowest ranking door card betting first.

Once betting is concluded on this round, another card is dealt face up to each player. Another round of betting follows, but this time the player with the highest card showing begins the betting. If a player has a pair showing, he has the option of raising the stake to the next level.

Another card is dealt face up, and another round of betting follows. If the stake have not been raised by a player with a pair on the last round, then they are raised automatically now.

The final card is dealt face up, so each player now has a total of 5 cards - 4 face up and 1 face down. Betting takes place for the last time, before showdown. Following the standard hand rankings, the player with the strongest hand wins.

Once the winner has been decided, the cards are collected and shuffled, and a new hand starts.
