My name is Darren and I'm a software engineer from Scotland I work for a major telecomms company on maintenance of their management software but in my spare time I am an avid poker player. I play at least once if not three or four times a week online and attend local tournaments and gatherings. I also enjoy casino poker and have attend numerous casino hosted events over the last few years.
In order to expand my knowledge of the field I began writing news reports on poker and gambling related subjects for a blog which was eventually notice enough to be recommended for a spot here on WassOnline.
I now place my content on here in the hopes of reaching more people and getting my name out there as a gambling pro!
New poker players tend to make some common mistakes and lose a lot of money. So, if you are also new to poker, try avoiding the following mistakes:
Betting out of turn is one of the most common mistakes made by new poker players. They do not wait for the player on their right to act first. Betting out of turn for a new poker player could give an advantage to another player who has not acted yet. A player, who might have called, could fold if the new player ‘raises’ out of turn. The act of folding out of turn could also give unfair advantage to a player on the left because he or she will now know that the new player will not ‘raise’.
A lot of new players do not know what game is best, when it is their turn to act. In a limit game, the amount of bet doubles after the turn as compared to the amount that is there before, and after the flop. They must also be aware if the bet is raised.
The third common mistake made by a new poker player is - folding and not checking. Sometimes, if players don’t like the turn or flop, they fold immediately when it is their turn. As a new player if you are the first one to act, you can check because in case every player checks, you will be able to see the next card. The same thing must be done in the opposite situation too. If every player checks before your turn, you should also check because the free card that you will get might just make your hand.
Avoid throwing the chips you have in the pot. Instead place the bet in front of you so that the dealer can get to see if your bet is correct. He will then scoop the chips in the pot. Always remember to protect your cards. Place a chip or your hands on top of the cards you have. Your hand can be declared dead in case the cards of another player mix with yours when they throw in theirs.
Another common mistake made by new poker players is – throwing a winning hand in the muck. Avoid throwing in your cards, just in case a player calls out a better hand. The dealer will declare the winner of the hand. If you missed a better hand than you thought you had, you can be the winner. Make sure that your emotions are in control whenever you are playing poker.
Never throw tantrums or use foul language at the poker table because other players will not tolerate it. This is one mistake that must not be made by even an experienced player. Sometimes, the thought of making easy money through poker gets to the players and they start playing above their bankroll. Their greed takes over and they try their hand at games that they cannot afford.
Some other common poker mistakes include - imitating other players, overvaluing suited poker hands and being superstitious to a great extent. As a new player if you want to succeed in poker, make sure that you avoid these mistakes and go slow. With experience you will surely become a great poker player.
