Hi, my name is Phil and I’m from
I’m currently studying politics and social studies at college. I am a huge poker fan and I play in organised (friend no betting ;) ) tournaments with other students as well as playing online. I have always loved card games and poker is one of the most fun ones out there, it has been repeatedly described as the “all American past time” and I think this is defiantly true from the people I know.
I am hoping to eventually get far enough into politics to try and help peoples understanding of the game and hopefully disband some of the over the top gambling/sin related stigma that a percentage of American political groups associate with the game.
This article examines the different ways to play poker. While the most famous form at the moment is Texas Hold'em many other types are rising in popularity especially in the online poker scene and this article looks at the basics of each.
Texas Hold’em poker:
This is a seven-card poker game with easy rules that are not only learnt easily by beginners, but can also be played quickly. Even though it is a simple game, it can be complex and you will require a lot of practice and skill to master it. No wonder, Texas Hold’em poker has become a popular poker game. In Texas Hold’em, a disc known as dealer button is used for indicating the place where the cards will be dealt. Live bets are placed by two players who are at the left of the dealer button, prior to the deal. These live bets are known as large and small blinds. The main reason for referring these bets as blind is because these are made before seeing any card. It is called live because in the first round of betting, it counts as a part of any bet made further.
This is a form of Texas Hold’em poker, bringing some variables to the table. First the players receive four cards face down before the flop and then they use two cards from their hands with three cards from board for the best poker hand with five cards can be created. There is a challenge for players at every level of the game by throwing in the 8 or better hi/lo variable. In the Omaha poker game, nine cards, blinds and dealer button is used similar to the Texas Hold’em poker. When the game begins, facedown four cards are dealt to each player. With the first player on the left of the blinds starting the bet, the action begins. The players can check, bet and fold in turn or ‘raise’.
Seven card stud:
As a beginner you can easily learn how to play seven-card stud game. This game is not only extremely challenging, but also holds the interest of seasoned players. In a seven-card stud poker game, two cards face down and one card face up are given to every player. The player who has the lowest card opens betting. It is necessary for every player to call, fold or raise in turn. On subsequent rounds, the player who has the best hand starts the betting. All players are then dealt face up three cards and a betting round follows each card. The players who remain in the hand then show their hands and the pot will be given to the player who has the winning poker hand. The winning hand is not determined by the suits and pot is split with tied hands.
Seven card stud hi/lo:
High only game and high/low splits are different as the player with the highest card in a high/low split must open the betting. At shutdown, if there is a qualifying low hand, one half of the pot will be awarded to it and the other half will be awarded to the best poker hand.
Five card stud:
In this game, ‘ante’ a small wager is placed by all players and then two cards are dealt to each player by the dealer. One card is face up and the other is face down, also known as ‘hole’.
