Hi, my name is Phil and I’m from
I’m currently studying politics and social studies at college. I am a huge poker fan and I play in organised (friend no betting ;) ) tournaments with other students as well as playing online. I have always loved card games and poker is one of the most fun ones out there, it has been repeatedly described as the “all American past time” and I think this is defiantly true from the people I know.
I am hoping to eventually get far enough into politics to try and help peoples understanding of the game and hopefully disband some of the over the top gambling/sin related stigma that a percentage of American political groups associate with the game.

As far as betting in poker is concerned, it is important to take action at the right time, so that you are able to take advantage of a good opportunity. Once you have evaluated the strength of your hand, given your opponent’s possible hand and type of flop, you must consider the best strategies for betting so that you play your hand well. Some of the betting strategies that can be employed are:
Betting with best hand - Normally betting should be done when a player feels that he or she has the best hand. But there is an exception to it, where a player might want to check-raise the best hand or drive away other opponents. Even if there is a preflop raiser, never be afraid to bet.
To protect your hand - At times, players are not sure whether their hand is good or not, but in such cases they should bet out so that they can protect their hand against any free card, if they have best hand.
To know where you are in the hand - Sometimes you should bet in order to know what happens after that. In case you are ‘raised’ and you have a medium holding, you can fold. If a few players call, but your hand is not strong, you will have to back off. If you come out of the hand without delay then betting to gain information can save your bet.
Betting a semi bluff or bluff - You can sometimes opt to bet out against one or two opponents as a semi bluff or bluff.
Call - In poker, call means matching a raise or bet. A round of betting is considered to be over when an equal amount is bet by active players or when a player’s raise or bet is not called by any opponent. Some of the reasons to call in poker are:
For seeing more cards: A player with a drawing hand might be getting the correct pot odds with the call for seeing more cards.
For avoiding a re-raise: The original better is denied the option to re-raise in case of not raising and just calling.
To limit loss in equity: Calling is considered right only when players have the required pot odds for calling, but they will be losing equity on the amount that is contributed in the pot.
For concealing the strength a player’s hand has: A player might smooth call on early round of betting in case he or she has a strong hand. This is done to avoid the showing of the strength of the hand in hope of getting more money in pot later.
Calling is also done for manipulation of pot odds and for setting up a bluff in the next rounds of betting.
It is a good strategy to simply call to slow play a strong hand with a small pot. Calling and checking is also considered a good strategy against opponents who are very aggressive so that they can be induced to bluff on flop and turn. If a player has a medium holding, then it is sometimes right to call for seeing the development of the hand. This is also right when your hand can get affected by many dangerous cards. The player must wait and see if the turn of the card is favorable or not, instead of committing chips to pot.
