Backgammon is a board game that's meant to be played by 2 players. The object of the game is for each player to get rid of his playing pieces first when movement of the pieces is decided by a dice roll.
Backgammon's origins are believed to date all the way back to the ancient Mesopotamia and Persian civilizations ( 3000 BC) and until today it is considered one of the most popular board games in the world.
Because much of the game's progression depends on the outcome of a dice roll, Backgammon isn't considered a game solely based on luck. The game setup involves the placement of the game pieces in prefixed positions across the 24 triangles on the board, with 12 on each side. Once the dice is rolled, the pieces are moved in a clock-wise or counter clock-wise direction and once all of the pieces are in the 'home' zone of a player, they can be removed.
The rules of Backgammon revolve around the movements available with every combination of the dice. The pieces themselves can be 'eaten' if there is only one piece in the position in question. If there are at least 2 pieces, the opponent cannot step on that particular position. Therefore, one of the best strategies is to create a large number of these blockades to prevent the advancement of the opponent's pieces. The pieces are scattered over the board in a prefixed positions and as mentioned earlier, the goal is to dispose of all the pieces first.
The game begin with a dice roll. The player with the higher roll is the one to start off the game. The player will then roll the dice again and move accordingly. If his roll yielded a 4-2, he can move one piece by 4 and then 2, or vice versa, or alternately, move 2 pieces by 2 and 4. If a playing piece is 'eaten', the piece will be taken out of the board and with the next dice roll will return to one of the corresponding position in the opponent's 'home' zone. If the corresponding positions in the opponent's home zone are blocked, the turn will be forfeited and moved on to the opponent.
The game ends with the removal of all playing pieces by one of the players. If the winning player won before his opponent disposed of any of his pieces, this constitutes a 'Gammon', and is worth a double win. If the winner removed all of his pieces while his opponent still had pieces in the winner's home zone, it's a 'BackGammon', which is worth a triple win.
Online Backgammon was only natural evolution for such a popular game. In fact, non-profit game servers have been up and running since 1992, the very beginning of commercial internet as we know it. Gambling fans have took a step further and have established online backgammon servers which allow players to stake a certain amount and bet on their backgammon games.
