Pai Gow Poker - The Lowdown
Pai Gow Poker (A.K.A Double Hand Poker) was created by Sam Torosian and Fred Wolf, and is essentially an american version of a similar chinese game. The game itself is played by 6 players with a regular 52 card deck and one joker card.
The goal of the game is to create 2 poker hands out of the 7 cards each players is dealt by the dealer. One of the hands is a 5 card hand, and the other is a 2 card hand.
Each of the hands usually has a name – the 5 card hand is usually referred to as the “Bottom”, “High”, “Big” or “Behind”. The 2 card hand is usually referred to as “In Front”, “Hair”, “Minor”, “Low” or “On Top”.
Once the cards are shuffled and dealt to each player, 4 cards are set aside and are not used during the game. At this point, Betting positions are assigned with a number of 1-7 to the players, starting with the player acting as banker for the round, and then assigned counter-clockwise around the table.
If there's an open seat at the table, the cards are still dealt to that seat. Some casinos refer to this seat as the “Dragon Hand”, And they allow a player to bet on that hand once their original bets are set.
Next, we'll go over the hand rankings>>>
