Pai Gow Poker - The Lowdown (Page 2/2)
Now that we've figured out how to play the actual game, it's time to see what the different outcomes have in store for the players. The hand rankings are determined as follows:
When we examine the 2 card hand, the only possible hands you can have with two cards are either a pair, or a high card.
The five-card hand is ranked in the same manner as regular poker hands are ranked with one exception – A hand with an A, 2, 3, 4, 5 is ranked higher than a 10, J, Q, K, A. Note that this exception only applies to casinos in Nevada.
The joker can act as any card to complete a flush or straight, in any other case it's acting as an Ace. In the 2-card hand it is always acting as Ace. In some casinos, especially in the southern California area, the Joker is a wild card, meaning it can be any card the player chooses.
Next, We'll see how we determine the winner.
Once all bets have been placed it's time to determine the winner. If both hands of a player beat the banker's matching hand, then the player wins. If only one of his hands beats the banker, then it's a push. If both hands fail to win the banker, then the player loses the game.
It should be noted that ties result in the banker's win, so if both the player and the banker had a pair of tens, the banker wins the hand.
Each and every casino has a different policy regarding fees – it take a 5% rake (commission on winnings) or they may charge a flat fee per hand in the range of a few dollars.
That's it! You're ready to storm the Pai Gow Tables at your favorite casino!
