I've heard something about that
Basically you should play tight and wait until there are 3 players left and you're sure to get in the money before starting playing loose, since in many SnGs there are fishes that just play too aggressive and sooner or later they'll be knocked out.
Of course you can't just wait for AA or KK and go all in, because nobody is gonna call you; you've got to play some strong hands to avoid being killed by blind levels and maybe try to steal a couple of blinds. This way you won't probably make a high stack but if you make it to the last 3, then you'll have chips enough to risk something more (the difference between 3rd and 2nd prize is not much, while it is much between 2nd and 1st so it doesn't make sense to keep playing tight).
I think this style of playing though is based a little bit more on luck, since you play less hands but you've got to win them, that's why it is hard to employ it successfully.
