It depends on the type of income you want. If you want a consistant income you would go with ring games. If you want the big pay days, you go with MTTs. I mix it all in, but most recently have been sticking to sngs and mtts. The advice I give to you about tourneys is that SNGs are about quantity and MTTs are about quality.

I normally play both, but I've made most of my money through ring games. Ring games are good for making money quickly, however you can lose alot at the same time. I like to make alot of money at ring games then tilt it away, I'm very good at that.

I have been playing on line for around 3 1/2 years now and have NEVER spoke to anyone who makes a living from playing on line poker (ring or tourney). I play it as a hobby and treat it such. Have seen too many 'unbelievable' hands to apply enough of my bank roll to ring games so I tend to stick with low to medium MTT's. Have made a few hundred quid but not thousands.....

I'm a for fun player as well. Sure I want to win, but I don't log into WassPoker or any site thinking it's my ticket to a free ride to riches. I play because its something I can enjoy while the baby sleeps and the older ones entertain their crew. It's never been about the money for me. I think for a lot of players when it becomes solely about the money ~ the internal challenge/pressure to make a living from playing online poker is 1. unrealistic & 2. changes a persons game, or never allows them to find theirs.
The best advice I can offer is: I think a person does their best when they sit at tables they can afford to play at. Its too difficult to learn about the games and the players at your table if you are sweating the blinds and debating if you can afford to act. Play both ring games and MTT's, but understand there is a difference in how each are played and you'll have to learn the differences and adapt your game appropriately to each.
Also the best hand doesn't always win. If you play on a regular basis you will have many bad beats ~ it's part of poker.
It's poker and it's gambling ~ there a no guarantees.
Best of Luck at the tables.

hi gang,
i do better at sng. however i think
that has to do more with my personal
likes. somehow a tourny just feels more
competive than a ring game...even
though i know it's all the same holdem game.
best,
donvic

You must not be playing or talking to people at higher stakes. The rooms are FILLED with people who play for a living. Personally, I know many people that do it.

For me, this is a hobby that pays for itself. I truely believe that if it weren't for freerolls and money added tournaments I would be behind. I don't like playing ring games any longer as I don't care for the down side. When I play tournaments I know exactly how much I'm going to lose if I lose.

My feelings exactly Jolub. If I go to my poker club, I NEVER play the cash tables, even if I have donked out early from the tourney. That way I know that my spend for the evening's entertainment will £20.00 or £50.00 and no more.
