7 card is a tough one to get going, not many people know how to play it properly.
Take this example in a brick and mortar casino I played at,
BAD BEATS DO HAPPEN!
I am playing 7 card stud with quite a few normals who are all elderly. They know me very well and know that even though it's a limit $1/2 game, if I am coming over the top, they better watch out.
So I'm playing some dog races for fun and sitting back playing quality hands because a lady in her 30 somethings has sat down and doesn't know how to play the game at all. She thinks starting with 1 pair is great and doesn't understand draws and card odds around the table. So I finally hit 3's rolled. She is showing a 7 and I see 2 7's face up on the board and 1 A. I KNOW obviously she doesn't have trips and it would be hard for her to hit the case A. I make a complete bring in and get raised to 4, I raise to 6 and she comes over the top to 8. I put her on AA in the hole. Coming from learning hold em and thinking you can play 7 card it just made sense to me. Quite a few people stayed in the pot which surprised me, they must have had good str. flush draws or something.
My next card a 3. FIRST FOUR CARDS were 4 of kinds 3's.
First position is the lady i her 30's who was capping, she is now showing A,4 offsuit.
Wasn't too worried about other people's hand although I forget what was on the board. I had 4-5 callers though, it was a huge pot for 1/2 limit.
I'm first to act I bet 2, everyone calls except her, she makes it 4, I go 6, she caps 8. I'm like this is GREAT! Plus I have 4 or 5 people still in the pot who probably don't believe I have quads. (Just hard to put someone on quads)
Next card for me is garbage offsuit which helps my hidden hand.
Position 1's next card is a 4.
She is now first to act with 4's, even after my cap, she bets. I do not put her on trip or 4's in the hole, simply because she's a bad player. We cap it at 8 again. At this point I know I'm way ahead and I'm just extracting tons of money out of everyone with her help.
The next card for me another garbage card to help my case.
Her next card is a 4.
I am showing (2 down (3,3)) 3, 3, garbage, garbage.
She is showing (2 down), 7, 4, 4, 4.
Of course she is first and probably thinks at best I have trip 3's and her trip 4's or boat 4,4,4,A,A is what I'm thinking. She bets and we cap it again.
Dealer deals the last card face down. and I keep it to the side on purpose. By this time the pot is MASSIVE. Nobody in will fold because of the pot value even though with my keeping 1 card to the side, they know I had a made hand from the start.
She bets 2 into me again,
I go 4,
She goes 6
I cap 8.
Pot was probably $200 in a 1/2 game at this point. A just insane pot.
So when she calls, she first flips over her first 2 cards, which were AA like I thought.
Then she states "(Valley girl like in her 30's yes) OHMIGOD, you'll never guess what I got on the last card!"
Her final card...... 4.
She caught 4 running 4's to beat my rolled 3's with my next card into quads. This was literally 2 months before they started the bad beat jackpot of quads or better. I showed everyone my starting hand without even flipping over my last card. I thought some of the older people were going to have a heart attack and drop dead right there. Some of them were offering to buy me lunch and all I did was take out a smoke and briskly walk outside without saying a word and proceeded to smoke that cigarette in about 1 inhale.
This was by far the worst beat I have ever received in poker. Catching a one outer on the river seems like a walk in the park compared to pulling the only 4 cards in a row that were alive most likely to beat my quads.
Some people just don't understand 7 card and probably never will. lol
