Owen scores on United debut

Michael Owen scored the winner on his Manchester United debut on a pre-season tour of Asia.

A day after United were forced to cancel the Indonesia leg of the four-country tour following the hotel bombings in Jakarta, Sir Alex Ferguson's men were given a stern test by a plucky Malaysia XI side.

Owen was given the auspicious number seven shirt worn by George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo, and Ferguson said it was a challenge he would relish.

He came off the bench to score the winning goal, giving United a 3-2 victory over a side ranked 157th in the FIFA rankings.

Wayne Rooney and Portuguese winger Nani gave them a 2-0 lead after 27 minutes, but Malaysia striker Amri Yahyah struck either side of the break, before Owen rounded the keeper to score five minutes from time.

Ferguson said: "I'm happy with the result and happy with the team. It was a typical Michael Owen goal. He was the first to react and the finish was what you would expect from him."

Good news. Presumably he is fit and I agree that is the key. If he stays fit he will be good for us.

Not sure about him being No 7 though. Its a special shirt. Not usually a striker's shirt either. Maybe it will spur him on though.

what a poor excuse of a thread, its like congregating all of the scum into one corrner of the forum Owen won't score more than 15, and thats even if he plays every game. Of the 15 goals, not one will be from outside the box, possibly from outside 6 yards. It makes me laugh you let Ronaldo and Tevez go and opted to keep Berbatov (presumably cuz nobody was interested in signing him) and signed Owen (dementia setting in with Ferguson?)

League table will look a little something like this next season

1. Liverpool
2. Chelsea
3. Manchester City
4. Arsenal
5. Man Utd

Arrow Ole Gunnar Solskjaer #2 ?

Manchester United and Molde F.K. are pleased to announce that they have agreed terms for the transfer of Mame Biram Diouf.

The 21 year-old striker is to attend a medical in Manchester next week with a view to joining the club in January. Until that time he will remain with Molde F.K. on loan.

Speaking at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur earlier today, Sir Alex Ferguson said: "We’ve been looking at him for two years.

"We weren't intending on signing anyone else after [Gabriel Obertan] last week - we feel we have a full squad - but the situation accelerated to a point where other clubs started to make bids, so we had a decision to make.

"We decided to act now and he’ll be the last person we sign this summer."

To date, Diouf has scored 38 times in 73 appearances for Norwegian side Molde, the same club from which United signed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as a virtual unknown in 1996.

Diouf's impressive tally of 17 goals from 21 games so far this season includes a hat-trick in the first nine minutes of last Sunday's league match against Brann. He added a fourth strike, in the 27th minute, as Molde marched on to a resounding 5-2 victory.

A fellow countryman of several UK-based players including Blackburn's El Hadji Diouf and Portsmouth's Papa Bouba Diop, Mame Biram Diouf has represented his native Senegal at youth, Under-21 and Olympic (Under-23) level.
