Sorry everyone in the usa but reading fuggies reply made me laugh so much I had to reply, politics is of no interest me either for the same reason (as bad as each other) but I hope you all get the president you wish for, good luck to them both.

Great question! - I really wish there were more to choose from (especially this time).. The US is screwed up that way, we need some more parties for sure.. - But the 2 parties have a stranglehold and they don't want to let go.

Allot of our two-party system problem resides in campaign financing. It has been structured by the two parties that have control at any given time to favor themselves and make it more and more difficult for a legitimate tertiary party to emerge.
There are actually several parties in the election, but because they cannot raise the funds, and also that most of them lack the resolve and organization to create a solid voter base, they are all deemed irrelevant.
Another piece that stands in the way is how we allow the states allot of discretion in determining who gets onto an official ballot. Every candidate for the Presidency has to attain eligibility in each of the states individually.
If we really wanted to take the bi-partisan aspect out of our politics, it also takes allot more than just getting one candidate with some cash to blow on an election. If we wanted a viable third candidate for 2012, we'd have to have the foresight to organize a true party that could put together a platform and inform the public about it, as well as gather together a pool of worthy representatives that can demonstrate the parties capabilities at all levels of government.
Did I mention I'm trying to finalize a platform? Donations can be made to me. I won't be the candidate, sorry, but I'll find someone who will represent us all well.
