US election
Why are there only 2 candidates.
In GREAT BRITAIN we have at least 20
parties in with a chance. Even the Monster Raving Loony Party
What does it say about the intelligence of Americans.
Little joke.
Put paddy (the Irish) in a room with a shovel on each corner and then say "Take your pick"
Unfortunately the whole world suffers from what the US electors do tonight.
Is it in the US Consitution that there shall only be 2 parties.
or are you following the rise and fall of the Roman Empire.
Maggie Mae and Freddie Mac have got a lot to answer for. Irresponsible lending started the credit crunch.
Well done America

Yep Deano.. I think he may also be trying to insult the Irish too, I'm not sure - doh!..
I actually do agree with him and understand about Fannie Mae (maggie mae, lol) and Freddie Mac though -- somebody ought to pay for what they have done to our economy because it has been so devastating and will be for some time to come. Ugggg don't even get me started about that!

Well, let me see if I can translate xenias first point...
I believe he was complaining that we have a two-party system. Unfortunately, he doesn't realize that there were actually about 13 presidential candidates on the ballot in most states (yes, it does vary state to state, as each state establishes it's nomination guidelines).
Of course, it really does come down to two parties in the end, except for 2000, when the third party, along with allot of voter manipulation and rampant fraud, assisted the moron in chief in attaining his office.
As for the Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac thing, you gotta dig deeper folks.
True, the government (here, there, and allot of places) encouraged the lending boom. They missed allot of opportunities to utilize sound regulation and oversight to avoid the bubble created by sub-prime lending.
They also could have excercised allot more caution in allowing financial service institutions to create the investment strategies that freed the banks up to do more, and riskier lending.
They also could have done more to repair and produce a better transportation infrastructure and less energy dependence so that when energy costs skyrocketed, Joe-six-pack who bought his dream house way out in the X-urbs for way too much on a really bad financing plan, they didn't go bankrupt.
Of course, if we didn't allow our corporations to take advantage of third world cost effectiveness and ship our jobs 5,000 miles off-shore, instead of 50 miles into the X-urbs, we wouldn't have 60% of our population living in the modern world poverty of the working poor. (How sad is it that we think of poverty when we can still buy a meal, or rent a ram-shackle apartment for shelter while getting any part-time job for 5.85 an hour, and yet children feel grateful to toil all day for a dollar or two and sleep under shanties in other parts of the world?)
I could carry on, but my point is, there are allot more people to blame than you think for the economic mess, it's just a shame that so many people stumbled into it, and so many more are getting dragged through it, while a select few are getting the benefits of some poorly thought out rescue plans.
That's enough for now, time to watch history as the old white guy concedes.

Our primary third party is usually just listed as independent, but it usually is some oddball offshoot like the green party. You hardly ever hear about them because they never garner enough support/press to be viable. They never really drop out of elections, but because they have so little support, they get no press.
Our elections take forever because we still have this strange attachment to outdated systems, believing that it protects our heritage, all 232 years of it.
It takes so long for the president elect to get into office because we still use a schedule of succession based on the transportation abilities of the 1800's.
Our campaign's and caucuses take 10 months because it used to take that long to travel by train from state to state to introduce the candidates, and debate the issues for the public (usually done at state fairs throughout the summer and autumn months).
Our election is on Tuesday, because it used to take allot of voters a day on horseback to get to their polling place. So, Sunday you went to church, Monday you rode your horse, Tuesday you voted, Wednesday you went back home.
It used to be that the Presidents inauguration was in March, at least it was moved two months sooner. One reason it still takes two months, the President elect still isn't elected. Because we still use the electoral vote system, where the state casts electoral votes in December based on the general election results, that's one month of waiting in order to ensure a proper vote was conducted.
It's also a time for the new President elect to organize their cabinet and staff, to gather information that is reserved for the President alone, and to put affairs in order, as usually we are electing someone who holds some office in public government.
Since the legislative branch of our government is usually not in session, the reigning president usually has relatively few major decisions to make. But we entrusted that person to four years of service, just as we did their predecessor. Hopefully in that process we have vetted out anyone whou would be so petty as to trash the government in those two months after losing an election.
