English men are historically supposed to display "sang-froid" and a "stiff upper lip" at all times. To show emotion in public, especially "blubbing", is seen as deeply shameful and unmanly. The only exceptions to this rule are:
- When stirred by great music or poetry, viz, Lord Patten when Governor of Hong Kong, breaking down when the band played Elgar's "Nimrod", as the Union flag was lowered for the last time, and the province was handed back to China (1997?)
- Upon the death of a favourite dog or horse.
These are the ONLY exceptions, even the passing of a mother or wife do not count.
So, Deano, you're all right by the English aristocracy, if that's any consolation
ps, If you don't know it, have a listen here,
and feel free to blub until your heart is cleansed!
( I always do, and I don't even like classical music)
