Question for some of the better players:

Turbo tournament. Blinds are 500/1000. I've got 4500 chips left, I move in with K-7 of spades. I get called by a player with around 10,800 chips in the BB with 6-9 of hearts. My thinking is that this was a bad play on his part. I'm a 60-40 favorite, he's not getting even 2-1 on his money, if he loses he gives me a lot of chips and he is down a bunch. I lost the hand (obviously) but was it a bad play on his part? Comments please!!

I am not answering this post as one of the better players on this forum(I am certainly not that), but to offer my thoughts on the question asked.

Point one. It is a Turbo Tournament, which in my opinion stands for crap shoot. With your stack levels you having 5 x BB and the other player 10 x BB you are both short stacked.

Point 2. You do not say what position you are in in respect to the dealer, this is quite important to the decision made.

Point 3.As he was the last to act, he may of thought you was trying it on with high cards and thinking that both his cards were live and he had already invested money in the pot that he wanted to take a chance.

Point 4. You do not say how many players were left and where abouts you were in relation to the money, another important consideration.

Point 5. Dependant on your position in respect to the dealer you could ask if it was bad play on your part. You couldn't knock him out so he had equity in reducing the field also.

Point 6. There was 6000 chips in the pot and he had to put in 3500, so the odds were 60/35 compared to the actual odds of 60/40, quite a close call.

My opinion is that I would not of made the call he made with the cards he hadI would of waited for a better spot, But there was not long to wait and it was a very close decision. Whether it was a bad call by him I must say that I do not think it was bad play in a turbo tournament as sometimes chances have to be taken and races have to be won. You lost this one.

Nick

I am not the better of the best myself either I do play alot The way I see it the other player hadthe better hand from the get he had flush and str8 outs where you would have to catch 5 runners to str8 I like low cards because if alot of people call at start and fold most high cards are dead So like I said I am not one of the best but I do earn enough in winning to play my share of buy ins any time you go all in you take the chance of going all out no matter what two cards you have I won a hand yesterday I had A 6 hearts Opponent had pocket QQ She went all in I was short stacked so I made my move cards fell 88882 I won I felt sorry for her cause she had me and it just fell a bad beat for her

No matter how you slice it K7 suited is a better hand than 96 suited. Not by a huge margin - only about 3:2, but over the long term, this seeming small difference turns into a lot of money.

As for they play of the hand, there's a ton of info missin, as spiersy already noted. Another thing to add to the list is how you had been playing. If he thought you a loose player, it would be a consideration toward calling. I wouldn't, but then most of the time, I wouldn't push with K7 either.

Thanks for the input folks!! I appreciate it. Here is some more information: I was in third position, the caller was the BB. We were still about 9 places away from the money. My thinking was with the blinds at 500/1000 and getting ready to go up, I felt that with my stack a suited K was a good play. My thought about my opponents play was that he had a lot more chips and didn't HAVE to make the call, even though is was close odds-wise. I was in a position where I felt I had to make a move and I just didn't feel that my opponent had to make the call. Keep em' coming!!
