1010 under the gun
I was in the MTT tournament.
Blind is $50 I had pocket 10 in under the gun position.
What would be right play in the preflop? Should I raise or call?
If raise is right play, how much is right amount to raise?

personally speaking i would come in for a raise to about 250 or there about depending on how big my stack is... sometimes i may just limp in as well all depends on stack size and also how my opponents are playing.. i would also call a raise if someone so happened to raise and hope that the flop brings me a nice present if it doesnt and there are scare cards on flop i can easy get away from it and live to fight further

Personally from that position I would limp in to see what the field did, 10 10 not that good a starting hand, I would call a small raise from the field but fold to an allin.

this would be determined by the other players on the table...and the type of game i was playing....i play bounty games regularly and find aggression works in these so a high raise would be my play....whereas in a rebuy i would be inclined to call and see what the board threw up....then again this is poker so what might be right one day could be the very opposite the day,or even the game, after

Gotta agree with this even though sometimes putting in a smallish raise to mix your play up a bit could be a good thing
With the blinds still being relatively low i dont think it would be a good thing to raise by too much and leaving yourself pot committed and probly playing the hand out of position if you get called or re-raised

how i would play it
I would maybe three bet it because betting in early position shows strength already. If the table is really tight, if someone raises you, I'd fold. If you get to see the flop, then you could bluff a much stronger hand if you win the position. If a ten hits, then you're golden since you've sweetened up the pot and can value bet if nobody hits on the flop. If it's a loose aggressive table, I'd still probably three bet it so if some retard raises me much more, I can fold without much damage to my stack. In a loose aggressive table, even if the odds are that the donkey has a smaller pocket pair, you still need to fold.

I agree 10 10 is kinda annoying to get under the gun. I usually put something like a 4 BB raise. You don't want too many garbage hands calling. Its not to hard to get away from tho if someone reraises.

royalhawk,
at a ten player mtt tourny,i would only call the bb and c what happens....of couse everything depends on ur chip stack as well, compared 2 others...big stack might wanna raise 2x,3x,4x and go from there...

Since the blind is 50, I assume it's still pretty early in the tournament, and that you still have quite a few BB in your stack. If so, this is a decent spot to try a bit of small ball. Bet 2.5X and see what happens. If there's heavy action like a raise and a call, you can fold and not lose too many chips or decide to set mine. Otherwise, you're in a moderate-sized pot with a moderately good hand.
