I have a son who loves poker & he plays well. He has had odd jobs and then his regular job since early teens. He has both a work ethic, and understands the value of education. Our higher education is set up differently here. In the states you graduate high school at 18 and then go to college/ tech school / the Armed Forces. You can't sit at the table until 21. If he wanted to travel for a year and play poker I would be fine with it. If he was able to stay here and play poker for a year I would be fine with it.
I still have 20 plus years (its really nearer 30) until I will be able to retire. 18 years old to 70 is a long time and once you get caught up in the rat race chances are slim you will have an opportunity to take a shot at it. 52 years is a long time. Some of those kids want to take a shot, live a little and either make the big leagues or get with the program and educate themselves, I personally wish them luck and a boatload of fun before they settle into the grind I am in.
I might be a total lunatic, but that's my take on it. That wouldn't necessarily be the right choice for my other son. The choice to do something like that depends on the individual who would be doing it. Not everyone fits under the blanket of statement that its idiotic or stupid though.
