I couldn't wait for thisthread to get here, as I knew it would with all you footy crazies in here.
I heard about this contract and instantly thought of the last years of Pele, making a boatload of cash (a pittance in comparison to Beckhams' contract) off a woeful American Soccer League trying to raise football awareness over here. It didn't work then, and this most likely won't work now.
We've tried this with quite a few retiring European stars, and while we may slightly recognize the names, and maybe want to catch them in action, it won't be much more than a novelty and wear off quickly, again.
I've got to Imagine that it's a great fit for Beckham, besides the obscene amount of money, he wasn't much longer for the premiere European teams and I have to imagine that he won't mind the opportunities that relocating to Los Angeles and it's media networking will afford him, even if he is only here for the games.
I didn't hear the specifics on his contract, but I know that it was salary and endorsements, can't wait for the commercial barrage that should begin in about, oh, say two weeks to finish up production on the first advert.
Bully for you Beckham, a job well done. As for those corporate nit-wits trying to promote soccer in the U.S.A., try raising up and promoting a decent "home grown" sensation like we had with U.S. Womens team at the turn of the century. Until then, all we will have is a mild distraction for those rainy days when absolutely nothing else is on (MSL) or an overhyping of a relatively weak men's world cup team every four years (hopefully they will square things up and get to playing the game this next time). (of course, not myself personally, I got "UEFA", "premiereship", and "International Football" programmed into my TiVo's watch words, too bad I only get about 5 or 6 games at most in a week, all too often, none).
