There's no doubt luck plays a major role in Poker, which is why I wouldn't class it as a sport. My definition would be similar to the one given above - 'the competitors activities/actions and that of their opponents are the sole determiner of the outcome with no other outside influences being a factor'.
The above defiintion applies to Chess and I would very much class Chess as a sport (albeit a boring one - yet highly skilled). However with poker, you could give a masterclass display yet come unstuck due to a one or two outer hitting despite the odds being stacked hugely in your favour.
You bring up some good points here Flibbs, but in clear typing what you are really pointing out here is as long as you can play the game better than the opponent and there's not much luck involved its a sport, yeah?
Like Snooker and Darts??
Like Buxon says these are sports you can start playing when you are 30-40 years old, chess as well, you can be the Chess World Champion, smoke 30 a day and weigh more than the Heavyweight Champion of the World, not having one muscle showing on your body... ???
Yep, even finely toned athletes like Matt Skelton and Andy Fordham can be considered athletes as they participate in a sport
For a footballing example, see Neville Southall lol

YES!!
Just because you don't run around doesn't mean its not a sport you don't in darts !!If it wasn't it woudn't be on all the sports channels!!If its not a sport what is it??
poker is certainly a sport... is the only one in which you can win even if can't win,,, the only one in which you can mix luck and capacity only stay sit on a chair in every moment you want, everywhere!!!
I say poker is a sport. Let's face you can bet on it just like all sporting events!
So if it is not a sport, the question becomes WHY NOT?
Poker games last for days and note the GAMES part. Do we not call sporting events as games? When we ask a coworker or anyone else the following about the play etc.
I concur with flibbles on this one, the element of luck involved in poker means it is not a sport, whatever percentage you give the luck factor, and that is a whole new topic, it is a game, or a hobby much like backgammon.
No body mentioned fishing, that is classified as a sport, is there luck involved in that.
The important thing about this question is that if poker was classified as a sport would that mean that the online ban on playing poker could then be lifted be.
