First of all I would like to say thanks to the site for making me prov active but now I need your help....

I have great success with online tourneys but as soon as I play down my local (every week £10 a man) i always seem to end up just outside the placings. I play exactly the same way but I get no joy.

My conclusion was that I am better than these players and they would just call anything so you put a big raise in to steal a pot and they would call you with bottom pair which surely they haven't got a read on me as I see them play all the time and most of them chase everything..but on the other hand if I try being like a rock this means that I will have to wait for great hands which could not come all night..

I need some fresh ideas please tell me how to play against average players down your local pub

Hi Lath

Just a quick response ....you don't say how many players so its a bit difficult to give you anything specific however i'll give you what i do when close to the money.

Average players calling you all the way with bottom pair????

working on a final table scenario 10 players....

ok the simple answer is 'when your playing a weak player you have to show him a hand'

Doyle Brunson's famous quote from Super system and it's true.

So here's how i play when i'm in the run to money and up against weak players ... (caveat: you must know your players doing this against a good player will make you go broke)

Against weak players the one thing thats in your favour is that the majority of weak players don't raise pre-flop with mediocre hands they call the big blind and enter a flop cheaply ( again not taking account of the maniac raiser you have to deal diferently with those)

they want to hit something one the flop and then they become a limpet and will not let go of a hand ..... so

your hand selection can be a little losser then being tight looking for premium hands as you can enter a pot cheaply, and a major benefit ofplaying players like this is you can enter a pot from any position.

effectively you need to play the flop against weak players, the one thing i have found is that weak players will 'advertise' they have something on the flop andfrom the flop it's pretty easy to work through the hand ....

so............if no one bets you bet when it gets to you a reasonable bet into the pot (whether you hit or not),anyone staying in (with a call or raise) has something therefore if youmiss on the flop your done........... release and move on, if you have top pair it's down to your judgement of the player(s) in the hand with you.

this strat will allow you to play a few more hands than 'tight' and will also give you the opportunity to bust players holding bottom and middle pair... obviously if you think your infront on the flop ... make them pay to continue, remember you entered the pot cheaply pre-flop therefore you have that bet PLUS your flop bet to play with .... so your flop bet can be an overbet ( to you it's not as you wouldof committed that amount anyway)... if you think your ahead why not get full value for it....

on a final note when your get down to 3/4 players your strat obviously has to change as the blinds come round faster meaning you have to play losser...... premium hands are far less likely so the'alarm bellhands (AQ,AJ,KQ etc...) actually step up to being power hands.

what i would say is until you get to heads up playing weak players you have to alter your game to post flop play and forget trying the pre flop aggression.

just my opinion.....

lath i know exactly how you feel, my advice if you are playing with players like that is too be more patient and less agressive, i know it sucks but it took me awhile to realize that with my homegame players. then when you score a unbeatablehand you can reel them in, good luck

YEA I AM WITH MONK when u say you are 2 good for these players that is for not sure cause if u cant beat a poor player u will not beat a pro or a better player u just have to be very selective DONT bluff them on the flop river or turn cause they WILL CALL with bottom pair or middle pair so kee the flops cheap dont raise to much pre flop as u knbow they will call and try that 1 more thing NEVER check raise a poor playerif u are trying to work u will just shoot yur self in the foot cause he has not got the skill or the brains to work out he is was trapped but i dont think there is a lot of differance by the sounds of it from your online play and it wounds like u do well online so u should just play the same and u have the benifet of looking at them 2

It's a neverending story but I guess u should really be more cautious and less aggressive and maybe show ur cards once in a while so they see u mean business and you are not just messing around! That's what i do and sometimes people back off or tend to think about it more before they calll a big raise by me!Who knows, that could be my one bluff for the day or maybe not?Keep them guessing by showing some cards every once in a while!

Hi there

When playing against poor players......live or internet....dont bluff save your bluffs for the final table where the better players will be........ just play solid poker.... a bluff or check raise will just go over their heads... pick solid hands .... push them hard when you have a great hand.....

Next know your enermy..... take a small note pad......make notes on the people at your table.... it can be very intimidating to them.....take notes on what hands people open with .... eg if someone people call a raise with 79 clubs ...i call them flushers or if someone has poket jacks and then the flop comes A A 5 and your sat with an ace... and they just wont put them down .... these i call klingons ..... Take notes if they are loose or tight ....... if you get knocked out .....dont leave the pub stay and take notes on the final table players.... make a list at the back of your note book of the last 10 players .... if you do that every week ...you will soon find out, that i gess 5 of them are there at the final table most of the time. That way when you meet them in the early rounds you know they are the danger men.

Next if you are a good internet player.... but are struggling in a live game.... you need to look whats different...... well people can see you and how you react.... 1st tip when you are delt your cardslook at them the same way then place on the table the same way weather you are going to play or fold.....And do that every time....every time. Now look at the guy on your left .... look how how he handles his cards ... look how he holds them and puts them on the table ......then make note of if he folds or plays. now do this every hand....you will soon know when the guy is going to fold ... this effectivly gives you 2 dealer buttons ....when you get good at this do it on the 2 people to the left ....and this can give you 3 dealer buttons if you know they are both going to fold

2nd tip ..... when your at the table and dealer is about to turn over the flop....what are you looking at .....the cards right.....WRONG...You should be looking at peoples faces to see their reaction to the cards ..... the cards will still be there.... you can also see if anyone else is looking at reactions. If you want to learn more buy this book..... Mike Caro's book of poker tells

Well just my thoughts
