I say that those "gut feelings" are the result of weighing the odds emotionally rather than mathematically. The thing to do is learn the most basic odds calculations (they're not that difficult) and then weigh the odds against your "gut."
Figuring the mathematical odds can keep you from making a big mistake on a "gut feeling" that could actually be a lot of other things .... like hunger, anger, or boredom. Haven't most of us talked ourselves into a bad hand on a "gut feeling" and then said..."that's okay, I was hungry anyway" or "that's okay, I'd rather lose than have to keep playing against that donkey."
Figuring the mathematical odds can also help you make a decision when your "gut" is on the fence. (tee hee)

If the odds say go for it, get off the fence and go for it. If the odds say back off, then back off and live to die another day.
Best of all...if you find the mathematical odds agreeing with your "gut feelings" a large percentage of the time, then you know that you are getting a good read on the game and your opponents... a skill we all need.
See Ya On The Felt!
