Default pot odd calculator

do you have to be a pro who can calculate the pot odds and then decide whether to bet or not? ordinary folks just play by 'card sense' and 'gut feeling'. i wonder whether there is any real way of bucking the odds and beating lady luck. think not.

You don't have to be a pro to calculate pot odds. A basic math understanding will do, its a fairly simple thing to get a hold of once you get started. Even with pot odds you still need your poker skills.

I agree, odds don't win the hands! But I would say "gut" feeling is one of those poker skills and my game has been improving as I learn to fold good hands.

I say that those "gut feelings" are the result of weighing the odds emotionally rather than mathematically. The thing to do is learn the most basic odds calculations (they're not that difficult) and then weigh the odds against your "gut."

Figuring the mathematical odds can keep you from making a big mistake on a "gut feeling" that could actually be a lot of other things .... like hunger, anger, or boredom. Haven't most of us talked ourselves into a bad hand on a "gut feeling" and then said..."that's okay, I was hungry anyway" or "that's okay, I'd rather lose than have to keep playing against that donkey."

Figuring the mathematical odds can also help you make a decision when your "gut" is on the fence. (tee hee) If the odds say go for it, get off the fence and go for it. If the odds say back off, then back off and live to die another day.

Best of all...if you find the mathematical odds agreeing with your "gut feelings" a large percentage of the time, then you know that you are getting a good read on the game and your opponents... a skill we all need.

I wrote a nice post about pot odds.
Here is the link: How to calculate pot odds

I use it during I play and it's very helpful. If you just started to learn how to calculate pot odds, try to practice it. Watch poker videos on YouTube and stop it when someone moves all-in and calculate the odds of the worse hand.

The percentages may differ because on TV they can calculate it more exact.

Default my outlook

the way i seem too calculate my odds are the # in the hand i try too feel a player out and i worry whats in my opponents hand more then what i have.there always a 50/50 chance that yours is better so i tend to slow play as much as possible if i know there is any chance of myself losing that hand.play in some low steak f/l ring games and youll learn alot.

U beat Lady Luck on the long run.

Most have a short memory and are to greedy to get rich with a few hands.
Also lots of players play in levels which are not suitable for their bankroll.

The Odds are only a small part of the poker knowledge, there is far more than just the odds... Odd, isnt it?

That's what poker sharks love - tight-passive players. Be careful when you play on any Merge site with that strategy. Your opponent can catch up if you slow play too much.
