Default laptop...

At xmas someone gave me a gift I was hoping for... I dropped hints and left flyers open to the pages this gift was on... The gift was a notebook and it cost just under 200.00 I was so excited that I didnt have to be in the same spot all the time to play games... However my excitement went away real fast. Now dont get me wrong I was very thankful for the gift... it was tiny and that was so cool. but i soon found out that you really do get what you pay for!!! I tried to download poker sites and forums but there was too much flash and sadly the perfect little netbook went back to the store =[

I was given the money to buy a netbook that might hold a lot of flash.. I had an idea, a really great idea! My Bday is in early Feb, so I stared with the hints again... Money to go towards a laptop or gift cards but they's all had to be from the same store... Future Shop it was... After my Bday I started looking in any and all flyers that sold laptops... I really think my family and friends were on the verge of calling TLC (the learning channel) and have an intervention for me.. I was addicted to flyers... 2010 is the only year I looked in flyers. I was all over it the moment I heard the mail box close! It was like xmas all over again but just for me, because I didn't get much for exas. I couldnt get enough flyers as I was comparing them against each other to see what was the best price so i would only spend as little money as possible ... See future shop will give you a cheaper price if you find the same item anywhere else, and I was working with future shop gift cards and cash... While I was going thru my flyer addiction I was putting 50 dollars away anytime I could... The next thing I know is I have 675.00 in gift cards and money... I found my "almost perfect" fit laptop on sale for 529.00... I was told it had everything I needed and then some. It's a Toshiba (I would have rather gotten an HP). 4GB, 500HHD, CD/DVD, almost a 16 inch screen...It even came with something called face recognition.. But I dont like the face thing, if for some reason I felt I needed something like that I'd just use a password...

I know it must have felt like you were reading a novel but I do have a few Questions for anyone who might be able to help me or has any suggestions...

1... I seem to be having a hard time typing ... just feels weird.. somethings off... I was using a wireless mouse and I liked it much better but the mouse died. You have no idea how had I find using a finger to move the thingy on my screen around... 2 days ago I had pocket aces and I was timed out and I had a full time bank... Any suggestions? Someone said to try a keyboard from a normal PC but the thing is I want to use the laptop in bed or while watching tv. Is there some sort of trick i'm missing out on?

2.... Is it better for my battery if I use the laptop plugged in whenever possible (while using the laptop) or should I be using the battery... To drain all the life out of the battery and then charge it to 100%... and doing this over and over again? Personally I think it should be plugged in at all times while using the laptop (unless it's 100% charged, I'll unplugg it and let it sit/sleep until I need to use it again...?

3.... I was offered a 2 year warranty and said I'd think about it. It costs 140 dollars. I didn't budget for a warranty so i'd have to save up again and i'm not sure if they'll wait that long ... I was told I have 2 weeks to decide and that was at least one week ago... Do you think laptops not the best in quaility... Did you or any of your friends personally have a defect or anything else (opening porn pages and getting a virus doesn't count).... Whenever I hear the word porn I think of levi johnson I would have put levi on a hockey rink in Alaska, wearing only his helmet, hockey gloves and holding a hockey stick! I'd like to see the real levi in his own elements, He's just an Alaskan hockey kid wanting to make the NHL... Just remember we have to take in account shrinkage on the cold ice, but than again they say the camera puts on 10 pounds! Sorry I got all off topic... Back on topic, what do you all think, should I go for the extended warranty, if so why? Or save the money and have a friend of mine hubby fix it... He's pretty good with getting rid of virus but if something when in side the laptop, I don't know if he's a parts person (that would be the only reason to get the warranty if he works with parts or not?

4... Is there anything I need to know about laptops cause i'm only using it for the basic needs. Emails, trying to find sites that are of interest, poker, facebook and rarely msn/hotmail chat...

Thanks for reading my book. I look forward to reading your answers, suggestions and advice =]

i was opposed to using a laptop after trying one on loan....the touch pad was frustrating to say the least....but ive relented and have been using this one for 3 months now....i love it...but only when i use the mouse...if im in my bed i find the mousemat works perfectly ...i usually use it unplugged and when the warning appears i plug it in....regards the extra warranty, im using a toshiba and ive found it to be very reliable(watch this...famous last words it will probably blow up tonight lol)

Only thing I can reply on is the mouse, I can not use the finger thingy on my Laptop either so I use a normal USB plugin mouse when at my desk and a mini travel USB mouse (on a mat/mag/book) when ill in bed, the keyboard you get use to over time. You can of course use a wireless mouse but I hate changing batteries in the middle of a hand
We in the UK get a 12 month manufacturers warranty on most goods, if you are going to have a problem with your laptop it normally appears straight away. Unless you are a heavy user as in business/travel, I see no need for extended warranty. My Home Insurance covers me for Accidental damage, old for new, should I accidentally kick it/throw it after a bad beat

Well, for the warranty, you know they charge you more than what the odds are that something bad happens to your laptop, and being a poker player, I think you go with the odds, and say no to the warranty. It's kind of like pushing AA preflop in a tournament. You know you could lose it all, but the odds are in your favor. Also, if I were you, I'd buy a wireless mouse while on your bed, and if for some reason, the touchpad doesn't work, turn on your wireless mouse as backup, and use that, but keep it off most of the time to save on battery life, and also so it doesn't mess you up if you accidentally move around on your bed. About the battery, it's bad if you leave it connected to the wall at all times. I got maybe 2 hours worth of free time from my laptop because I didn't know plugging it in all the time also killed the battery. I've heard draining it is best before charging it up again, and I've heard that if you aren't using it for a long period of time, keep it idle half charged. In general though, I do believe keeping it plugged in all the time is bad. However, if you move around a lot while playing poker, it's good back up in case you accidentally unplug the power source, and heck, hopefully your poker winnings can cover a new battery when the time comes. On average, I think in 3 years, the battery will still last a bit, but it usually annoys the user on how short it lasts by then, and you'll prob want a new battery. I'd look at compatible but reliable generics from a reputable online store.

Unhappy

I hate the touchpad so I definitly would use a mouse (wireless or plug in)
the waranty thing is as a rule wasted money
I have heard that it is deadly to use the laptop on house power with the battery installed charge it up to about 75% and remove it and only use it if there is no house power available or if you wish to walk around while playing (not a good idea because you might throw the damn thing through the wall if you get a bad beat)
lastly-- the keyboard is definitly different than a normal keyboard but it is easy to grow into.

I've not long been bought a laptop. It came with the extra warranty which is good as the original warranty didn't cover the screen or accidental damage. I've also been told that even if my laptop dies in 18months time and it is no longer the same range as it was when bought, (they update every month or so) they won't give me the same one back but an upgrade. so my 250gb will probably increase to something stupid like 900gb!

As for the mouse touchpad i've tried using it to play poker and other stuff and end up clicking the screen in the wrong place when im trying to move it! so i've got a mini usb mouse that i can use on a book, magazine, side table ect.

With regards to the battery i find that letting it run down to about 20% (it always warns me its running low at 20%) i plug it in for so long and let it charge. Different laptops come with different batteries and different usage time before they deplete. check the manual and see what it recommends.

They generally dont check your laptop if you claim just write a letter from a pc repairer saying it cant be fixed. Tell the insurance you knocked it off the table or it fell off your lap while open.. With the letter they will just send you the cheque for a new one lol

Peace

My new Dell Inspiron laptop arrived this morning.
17" screen and only £429.
Has a built in web camera but haven't worked out how to use it yet.
And the background music is awful.
I will have to work out how to turn it off.
Loaded PKR which took 3 hours.
Loaded WassOnLine which took 1 minute.
Again I can play poker and watch the telly at the same time.
I did miss that.
Just got to load Cake for tonight.
