Sandbag - To check a strong hand with the intention of raising or re-raising; slow playing

Satellite - A small-stakes tournament with entry into into a larger tournament as the prize

Scare card - An up-card that looks as though it could have made a strong hand

School - Players in a regular game

Scoop - To win the whole pot

Second pair - In flop games pairing the second highest card on the board

See - Call; to call

Semi-bluff - To bet with a hand that probably isn't the best hand, but does have a chance of improving

Set - Nickname for Three of a kind

Set you in - To bet as much as an opponent has in front of them; to take an opponent all in

Seventh street - The final round of betting on the seventh card in seven card stud

Shootout - A tournament format in which a single player ends up with the whole prize money, or a tournament in which play continues on each table until there is only one player left on each table. Tables are then combined and the process repeats until there is a final winner

Short odds - The odds on an event that has a high chance of happening

Short-stacked - Not having very many chips left

Showdown - The point at the end of the final round of betting where all the remaining players cards are turned face up in order to determine the winner

Side card - An unmatched card which may determine the winner between two otherwise equal hands

Side pot - A separate pot created if play continues once one player is all-in

Sixth street - In seven card stud, the fourth round of betting on the sixth card

Slow play - Disguising the value of a strong hand by under betting or checking, to trick an opponent

Slow roll - To slowly expose your cards at showdown to maximize the drama

Small blind - The smaller of the two compulsory bets in flop games, made by the player in the first position to the dealer's left.

Smooth - The best possible low hand when you have a high card

Smooth call - To call rather than raise an opponents bet

Speed - The level of aggressiveness with which you play. Fast play is more aggressive, slow play is more passive

Split -A tie between two more players in a hand

Stack - The chips that a player has in front of him

Stand off - A tie between two players with the pot divided equally

Stay - To stay in a hand with a call not a raise

Steal - A bluff in late position to try and take the pot from a table of apparently weaker hands

Steel wheel - In Low, a straight flush, five high

Straight - Five consecutive cards of mixed suits

Straight flush - Five consecutive cards of the same suit

Stuck - Slang for loosing; example 'I got stuck for $500'

Stud - Any form of poker in which the first card or cards are dealt face down, followed by several face up cards.

Suck out - To win a hand by hitting a 'lucky' card or series of cards; to win with a hand that started with poor odds

Suited - Cards of the same suit

Sweeten the pot - Nickname for raising
