American Football

The NFL is short for the National Football League. It started out as the American Professional Football Association in 1920 and was comprised of 11 teams. Today is the largest and most powerful professional football league in the country. With massive lobbies behind it and deep pockets to advance its concerns, when the NFL speaks, lawmakers listens. Currently there are 32 professional football teams that comprise the NFL. The reigning champions are the Pittsburgh Steelers and the current commissioner is Roger Goodell.

The NFL was started by Jim Thorpe, a former professional athlete and coach of the Canton Bulldogs, and Leo Lyon who owned the Rochester Jeffersons. The two men were determined to build a league that would make football just as big and successful as professional baseball. Although the seed for the league was planted in 1917, it was only officially formed in 1920 after the Great War and two years of convincing teams to sign up.

The National Football League oversees the planning and smooth operation of the league’s 17 week regular season as well as their post-season play-offs, which culminate in the most watched sporting event of the year – the SuperBowl. The season usually begins in the fall and runs until early winter with the SuperBowl being contested generally in early February. However, through shrewd planning and marketing the NFL manages to keep the teams and the league in the spotlight through a series of carefully scheduled events that unfold in the extended offseason. These events include the draft, the free agency signings and the announcements of the new calendar season.

Most recently the NFL convinced the country’s other professional sports leagues to stand along side it and launch a court challenge against the state of Delaware’s decision to allow sports betting. The federal appeals court recently disallowed the state from offering single game betting, which means that the state can now only offer parlay bets.
