American Football - NFL Betting

Ever since the inception of the NFL, betting on the league’s teams has been a highly popular pastime. Today, the week leading up to the SuperBowl, that ultimate contest between the league’s top teams, sees bookies taking record numbers of bets. It is the one sporting event that generates the most betting activity in the country – despite the fact that sports betting is illegal in nearly every state with the exceptions of Nevada, Delaware, Oregon and Montana.

Regardless of the ban on sports betting in the United States, determined punters have found ways to wager on their favorite teams. Local bookies operate clandestine sportsbooks while those who want to go the legitimate route will place their bets with bookies operating in the four states where sports betting is legal.

The NFL’s stance on betting is contradictory. It’s official position is that the league is adamantly against sports betting of any kind because it says that it undermines the integrity of the game and will cast doubt in the minds of sporting fans on the outcomes of matches. The NFL’s official stance is what led them to challenge the state of Delaware’s recently decision to allow sports betting. However, despite this anti-gambling sentiment, the NFL betting position shifted quite dramatically recently when they announced that teams will be allowed to partner up with their local lotteries to have their names and logos associated with instant win tickets.

The other factor that makes the NFL betting stance so hard to swallow is that their success is almost entirely due to gambling. In fact, the NFL recently fined the New York Jets and their former coach Eric Mangini $125,000 for lying about injuries on reports that affect no one except for gamblers!

So, when it comes to NFL betting, whether the league wants to admit it or not, the activity is what helped the league grow into the behemoth that it is today.
